  • English : patronymic meaning ‘son of Robert’, common in central England (see Dobb).
  • Arthur Dobbs (1689–1765) was born at Castle Dobbs, Co. Antrim, Ireland. In 1745 he purchased 400,000 acres of land in NC and was selected as governor in 1754. He married twice and his second wife, wed when he was age 73, was a girl in her teens from NC.
