- Of uncertain origin : This is a well-established American family name. Lewis Abshire bought land in VA in 1637, but it is not known where he came from. In a taxation list for Franklin County, VA, for 1786, there are mentioned William, Abraham, Christian, Jacob, and Lodowick Abshire.
