  • South German and Swiss German : from Middle High German anken ‘butter’ + būr ‘farmer’, hence an occupational name for a dairy farmer. Alternatively, the first element may be a topographic term, Anke, meaning ‘slight rise in the ground’, or an old term ank ‘watery’, hence ‘farmer with fields in a wet area’.
