  • Spanish and Portuguese : from a medieval personal name, a variant of Apolinario, via Latin from Greek Apollinaris, which means ‘belonging to the god Apollo’. This rather inappropriate Christian name was borne by various saints, including the first bishop of Ravenna, who was martyred in about 260.
