Family name origins & meanings

  • Finnish : topographic and ornamental name from aro ‘hard, relatively infertile ground’ or ‘wet meadow’, ‘swamp’, found both as a place name and as a surname throughout Finland. In many cases the surname was adopted during the name conversion movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in southern Finland.
  • Spanish : habitational name, in some cases from Aro in Galicia, in others probably from Haro in Rioja.
