  • English : habitational name from any of the numerous places so called, especially Ashton-under-Lyne near Manchester. Most are named from Old English æsc ‘ash tree’ + tūn ‘settlement’; the one in Northamptonshire is (æt þǣm) æscum ‘(at the) ash trees’. Others have been assimilated to this from different sources. The one in Devon is ‘the settlement (tūn) of Æschere’, while the one in Hertfordshire is ‘the settlement of Ælli’.

According to Social Security Administration data, Ashton, as a boys' name, has jumped around a bit. It has, however, stayed in the top 150 since 2003. As a boys' name, it also made quite the jump at the beginning of the 2000s, ranking in at 200 in 2002 and jumping to 101 in 2003. As a girls' name, Ashton is dramatically decreasing in popularity. It was rank 354 in 2000 and completely left the charts in 2005, not yet returning as a name for girls.

Ashton wasn't too popular until 2004, where it peaked at 74, most likely due to the premier of actor Ashton Kutcher's hit show Punk'd, who was actually born Christopher Kutcher. Other notable namesakes include drummer of 5 Seconds of Summer Ashton Fletcher Irwin and journalist Ashton P. Stevens.
