  • Italian : from a medieval personal name, Latin Athanasius, Greek Athanasios ‘immortal’. St. Athanasius (c. 297–373), bishop of Alexandria, was one of the most influential of the fathers of the Christian Church. He is venerated especially in the Eastern Church.
