Family name origins & meanings

  • English : from Middle English blōwere ‘one who blows’. The name was applied chiefly to someone who operated a bellows, either as a blacksmith’s assistant or to provide wind for a church organ. In other cases it was applied to someone who blew a horn, i.e. a huntsman or a player of the musical instrument.
  • Welsh : Anglicized form of Welsh ab Llywarch ‘son of Llywarch’. Compare Flower.
