Family name origins & meanings

  • Italian (two syllables) and French (one syllable) : metonymic occupational name for a maker or seller of boots, from Old French bote, Italian botte ‘boot’ (of unknown origin). In some cases it may have been a nickname, perhaps for a heavy drinker (who ‘drank out of a boot’).
