  • Probably an Americanized form of French Capitaine, from Old French capitaine ‘head’, ‘chief’, ‘principal’ (from Latin capitaneus), or of any of the various cognates, such as Italian Capitani, or German Kapitan, all of which were used in similar way to denote a high-ranking official, a headman, or a person of military rank.
