  • Italian : nickname for a tough or unyielding man, from duro ‘hard’, ‘tough’ (Latin durus). The word had both the approving sense ‘steadfast’, ‘enduring’ and the less favorable sense ‘stubborn’, ‘obstinate’, ‘cruel’.
