Family name origins & meanings

  • Spanish form (Echevarría) of Basque Etxeberria : topographic or habitational name from the Basque elements etxe ‘house’ + berri ‘new’ + the definite article -a. This is the origin of the name of a village near Pamplona, now called Xabier, the birthplace of St. Francis Xavier (1506–52), missionary to East Asia.
