Last name origins & meanings:

  1. French: from the Norman personal name Gervase, of disputed etymology. The name was borne by a certain St. Gervasius, around whom a cult grew up following the discovery of his remains in Milan in 386.
  2. A family Gervais from Bordeaux was in Quebec city by 1665; another bearer of the name, from La Rochelle, went to Quebec city in 1669; one from Normandy was in Île d’Orléans by 1672; one from Paris had removed to Montreal by 1676; and one from Brittany had settled in Quebec city by 1697.
