Family name origins & meanings

  • Polish (Kardasz), Czech and Slovak (Kardaš) : from an old Slavic word meaning ‘brother’ or ‘kinsman’, probably denoting a member of a junior branch of an important noble family.
  • Perhaps also Greek, a reduced form of Kardassis ‘brother’, from Turkish kardaş ‘brother, comrade’ or from a patronymic derivative of this, e.g. Kardassakis, Kardassiadis, Kardassopoulos.
