Family name origins & meanings

  • Galician : topographic name from Mero, a river in Galicia.
  • Spanish and Catalan : probably a nickname from mero ‘grouper’ (the fish).
  • Italian : possibly from mero ‘pure’, ‘sheer’ (Latin merus). Theoretically, this could also be a source of the Spanish name, but in any case it is difficult to explain its application.
  • Hungarian (Mérő) : occupational name for someone who worked with scales, from mérő ‘measure’, ‘measurer’, a noun derivative of mérni ‘to measure’.
