Family name origins & meanings

  • Irish : reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Maoil Mhichíl ‘descendant of the devotee of St. Michael’ (see Melville). In Counties Clare and Galway Mulvihill has been changed to Mulville and Melville, and in Ulster Mitchell has been adopted as an equivalent.
