(Middle High German oben(e) ‘up’, ‘above’ + hūs
‘house’). However, it may actually be a hypercorrected form of
Obenaus, a nickname for an upstart, a reduced form of oben
hinaus (oben ‘up’, ‘above’ + hinaus ‘out’,
indicating direction).
