Family name origins & meanings

  • Norwegian : habitational name from any of three farmsteads, so named from the dative singular of Old Norse óss ‘river mouth’.
  • Hungarian (Őse) : from a pet form of the old secular personal name Ős.
  • Japanese : ‘small strait’ or (Ōse) ‘large strait’. The latter is mostly found along the coast west of Tōkyō, but neither form is very common in Japan.
