- Japanese (Ōtake) : ‘large bamboo’; the name is found mostly along the southeastern seaboard and in the Ryūkyū Islands. Other names, much less common and probably unrelated but having the same pronunciation, are written with characters meaning ‘great warrior’ and ‘large residence’.
