  • Greek : patronymic meaning ‘son of the priest’, from papas ‘priest’ + the patronymic ending -poulos, an ending that occurs mainly in the Peloponnese, derived from Latin pullus ‘nestling’, ‘chick’. Greek Orthodox priests, unlike their Roman Catholic counterparts, were allowed to marry and have children.
