from the name of an area named Sheng. Mu Wang, fifth king
(1001–947 bc) of the Zhou dynasty, granted this area to a
follower, whose descendants adopted the place name as their surname.
There also is an account of a man surnamed Shi who, to escape
persecution by an emperor of the Yuan dynasty (1271–1368), changed
his name to Sheng.
