Family name origins & meanings

  • Italian : from a short form of the personal name Gaetano, or from pet forms thereof.
  • Spanish (Taño) : possibly nickname from taño ‘sucker’, ‘shoot’.
  • Japanese : it is unclear whether instances of this name in America are Tano, meaning ‘many fields’, or Tanō, meaning ‘many offerings’. Neither is common in Japan.
