Japanese : from an ancient and common place name meaning ‘lucky (or
good) river’, which was taken by several families, mostly in western
Japan and the Ryūkyū Islands. One family is of the Kudō
branch of the southern Fujiwara, while others descend from the
Ōe family (see Oe).
